Beyond These Stars launched in 1.0 on October 16, 2026, skipping Early Access entirely, and it asks you to run production chains for a population of Peeps while keeping the sentient whale under your city healthy enough to keep swimming. This Beyond These Stars overview covers what the release actually contained as of October 17, 2026: how terrain constrains your layout, why outposts are temporary, and what hardware you need. The prices, review counts and dates below are snapshots of that day.

The Release Snapshot

The Steam store page, read on October 17, 2026, credited Balancing Monkey Games as developer and Hooded Horse as publisher, dated the game Oct 16, 2026, and filed it under Simulation and Strategy with single-player, Steam Achievements, Trading Cards, Cloud and Family Sharing.

The date moved twice, which is why older pages still say October 15. An August 20, 2026 news post announced October 15; a September 15 post pushed it a day, saying "Beyond These Stars will now release on October 16, 2026!" There was no Early Access holding pen either — a March 9, 2026 post said the team would go "straight to a 1.0 release." Launch day itself announced "Beyond These Stars 1.0 is now live with a 20% launch discount!"

Building on Kewa: Terrain, Water, and Forests

A City That Travels on a Living World

Kewa is not scenery. The store page says the whale "longs for connection" and is "no mere pet", with hopes and dreams for the trip, and Dev Blog #29 (August 12, 2026) calls Kewa a sentient being with needs and wants of their own. Your streets sit on a body that moves, eats, overheats and remembers.

Two things follow. The ground is finite, because the store page warns the habitat shrinks if the land isn't tended with care, and the route is shared, since understanding Kewa's needs is what lets you "decide on a path together" instead of just riding along. The same blog notes Kewa "zoots" through space and carries the Peeps far from their home planet, so your city's address keeps changing.

Where the First Buildings Go

Your Peeps land on Kewa, "a lonely Space Whale journeying across the universe", and the site is stingy — the store page calls it "largely desolate and inhospitable", with just "a small patch of green by the water" to start from.

That leaves the central planning choice. You can fit buildings "around the contours of the land", weighing production-chain efficiency and how far goods travel, or "change its very shape to take advantage of adjacency bonuses and reduced travel times." Dense and efficient, or cheap and awkward.

Terraforming carries the second option: dig canals and add topsoil before farming, then plant trees to keep raw materials flowing and to spread the atmosphere so the city can grow. Forests do two jobs at once, which is why stripping them early hurts later.

Kewa notices. Dev Blog #29 (August 12, 2026) says planting trees, minimizing pollution and running rivers around settlements on Kewa's plate keeps the biome healthy, and the whale's mood feeds straight into your Peeps' mood. Sit too long in a hot galaxy and Kewa gets unhappy enough to make an emergency jump somewhere cold.

Kewa's stateWhat gets it thereWhat you get
HealthyTrees, low pollution, rivers around the plateFaster travel across the galaxy
Very happyHigh happinessKewa fruit trees spawn, with Peep happiness bonuses
OverheatedToo long in a hot galaxyEmergency travel to a cold system
UnhealthyDamaged biomeThorny Stems spawn, with negative effects on Peeps

A happiness meter tracks the whole picture. Past certain health thresholds Kewa starts talking to the Peeps, and the healthier the whale, the more of its past it recalls. Dialogue choices nudge the score, so being rude to a whale has a cost.

Supply Chains and the Cost of Expansion

Growth is a trap you build yourself. Research unlocks advanced goods, needs expand, and the answer is more logistics and mining infrastructure. Meanwhile the store page warns that "the land on Kewa is fragile, and if not tended to with care, your habitat will shrink." Each new chain is a claim on land that can disappear.

The Peep side fails in specific ways, and the dev blogs are unusually frank about them.

SystemWhat happensLever
SicknessChance of falling sick at the start of a shift; lower energy, higher chance (Dev Blog #25, May 28, 2026)Apothecary helps them recover
MourningA death costs happiness and can start mourning (same post)Memorial Statue grants an instant happiness bonus when visited on a break
StrikesEnough unhappy Peeps and they strike; "The first will be 3 shifts long" (Dev Blog #23, April 14, 2026)Later strikes shorten or lengthen depending on whether goals were met
CelebrationsFairground events boost production, movement and sickness (Dev Blog #22, March 18, 2026)Build the Fairground

Those four posts are pre-release design notes, so treat the numbers as intent rather than a description of the shipped build.

Before you spend a plot, ask what the output serves, whether inputs come from Kewa's soil or a planet elsewhere, how far goods and workers travel between steps, and what the biome underneath pays for the chain. The building is the cheap part.

Outposts, Aliens, and Kewa's Trust

Kewa runs short of room, so you build elsewhere. Outposts on nearby planets supply supplementary resources, but the store page cautions that "unless you build a strong relationship with Kewa, you may find it difficult to predict how long you have at an outpost before Kewa decides it's time to leave a system behind." Outposts are leases, not deeds.

Aliens are the payoff for traveling: encounters bring "additional objectives and their subsequent rewards, opportunities for trade, and new technologies."

Navigation opens gradually. Dev Blog #28 (July 20, 2026, pre-release) says the Galaxy Map starts only partly visible and reveals more as you go, with nodes holding barren planets that cannot support Peep life, space junk, strange objects, trade stations and aliens. The same post describes a Neutral Sector planet with chickens and cows, where the Pasture lets you farm milk and eggs and the Trawler and Orchard unlock, and notes a low-stamina Kewa detouring through debris fields to eat while debris breaks buildings you then repair.

FeatureWhat it gives you
Planetary outpostsSupplementary resources away from Kewa, with departure timing tied to your relationship
Alien encountersObjectives, rewards, trade and new technologies
Galaxy Map nodesBarren planets, space junk, strange objects, trade stations, aliens
Debris fieldsFood for a tired Kewa, plus repairs to damaged buildings

That is the part worth underlining: the map is not yours to schedule. The store page frames the trip as collaboration, with understanding Kewa's needs letting you "decide on a path together", but no departure timer or relationship threshold appears in the official material. A player-compiled page at beyond-these-stars.wiki reads it the same way — exact timers and thresholds never spelled out, and no detail on what becomes of an outpost after departure. Treat that as a wiki reading, not an official statement.

Sandbox Mode, covered in Dev Blog #27 (July 2, 2026, pre-release), hands you control over what is available on Kewa, including things normally found only on habitable planets in Story Mode. Options cover Resources, Water Distribution ("Want to start with a river, or without?"), Terrain and Planets. The devs still suggest Story Mode first, since it teaches the systems at a sensible pace with optional tutorial helpers.

Release, Demo, and PC Requirements

A demo exists. On October 17, 2026 the store page still carried a "Download Demo" button, and the August and September 2026 announcements were already steering players toward it before launch. It is the cheapest way to test whether the whale-city idea holds you.

The requirements are light: 64-bit Windows 10, 7 GB of free space with an SSD recommended, an Intel Core i5-6600 or AMD Ryzen 3 3200G paired with 8 GB of RAM and a GTX 960 (4 GB) or RX 570 (4 GB) at DirectX 11. The recommended build moves to an i5-9600 or Ryzen 5 2600X, 16 GB of RAM and an RTX 2070 (8 GB) or RX 6600 XT (8 GB) at DirectX 12.

Two hotfixes landed on October 17, 2026. Hotfix #1 changed the range line on a selected Power Generator to show power range instead of pollution range. Hotfix #2 fixed missing smoke and construction particle effects, and stopped the New Game tutorial checkbox from flipping back on after you disable it and open Difficulty Settings.

A player-compiled wiki claims a Steam Deck rating of Playable and lists comfort options such as adjustable difficulty, saving at any time, resizable text and a mouse-only mode. That comes from players rather than the store page, so check the official listing.

FAQ

What is Beyond These Stars about?

You build a city on the back of Kewa, a sentient space whale that carries your Peeps between star systems. Balancing Monkey Games developed it, Hooded Horse published it, and it arrived on October 16, 2026 as a single-player simulation and strategy game.

When did it release, and is there still a demo?

It released on October 16, 2026, one day later than the October 15 date announced in August, with a 20% launch discount. The Steam page still showed a "Download Demo" button on October 17, 2026.

Can you control where Kewa travels?

Only partly. The store page describes choosing a path together as your relationship grows, and the Galaxy Map reveals itself as you travel. No departure timer or relationship threshold has been published, so plan outposts expecting the whale to move.

What should I check before buying?

Look at the store page for the live price and demo status, then play the demo. This Beyond These Stars overview reflects the October 17, 2026 snapshot only, and prices, discounts and review scores change.
