Beyond These Stars Multiplayer: Is There Co-op?

Beyond These Stars is a single-player colony sim: as of 2026-10-17 the Steam store page lists no co-op or multiplayer mode. What that means for shared play.

No — as of 2026-10-17, Beyond These Stars is a single-player game. The official Steam store page lists "Single-player" as the only player-mode feature, and no co-op or multiplayer mode has been announced for the 1.0 release. If you were hoping to build a city on Kewa with a friend, there is no supported way to do that in the shipped game.

What the store page shows

The Features block on the Steam listing is short and specific: Single-player, Steam Achievements, Steam Trading Cards, Steam Cloud and Family Sharing. There is no "Online Co-op", "Local Co-op", "Multiplayer" or "Remote Play Together" entry, and the popular user-defined tags for the game lean toward Singleplayer, Colony Sim, City Builder, Base Building and Moddable rather than any multiplayer tag.

The Steam Community hub for the game tells the same story. The visible recent threads are single-player questions — how to upgrade huts to houses, where to get enough soot, why a burner generator and ore smelter won't connect — with no lobby, invite or co-op thread among them.

Why the confusion happens

Beyond These Stars is easy to mistake for a multiplayer game from its description alone. The pitch is about coexisting, meeting other species, trading with them and negotiating with a living Space Whale. All of that is you against (and alongside) the game's own characters:

  • Kewa, the Space Whale you live on, is an autonomous NPC with its own needs and moods, not a second player.
  • Alien species you encounter offer objectives, trade and technologies — they are story and diplomacy systems, not other humans.
  • Outposts on nearby planets are managed by you alone; nothing in the store description implies shared control.

If you saw a stream or video labelled with co-op, it was most likely a solo playthrough being watched or discussed by several people, not a multiplayer session.

Sharing the experience without co-op

A few listed features make it easier to play around one copy of the game, even though none of them are multiplayer:

  • Family Sharing is listed, so household members can take turns on the same library copy under Steam's family rules.
  • Steam Cloud is listed, which helps if you move between machines.
  • Steam Deck compatibility is rated "Playable", so handheld sessions are an option.
  • Sitting together and deciding what to build next is obviously possible, but it is a shared-screen habit rather than a game mode — there are no second-player controls or split responsibilities to assign.

If you're waiting for co-op

The game only launched on October 16, 2026, and the first hotfix arrived the following day, so the roadmap is very young. As of 2026-10-17, the developer's own channels linked from the Steam page — Discord, Reddit, Bluesky, X and the Balancing Monkey Games website — are where any future multiplayer announcement would appear first; the Steam store page does not currently list one. Modding is a tagged interest for the game, but nothing indicates a multiplayer mod exists, so treat any such claim as unverified until you see it working.

Practical checks

  • Before buying for a friend: confirm the Features block on the Steam page for yourself, since feature lists can change after launch.
  • If a page or video claims co-op: look for an actual lobby screen or invite flow in the footage. There is no documented invite, lobby or host/join path for this game, so any guide describing one is describing something else.
  • If you want to play "together" remotely: screen sharing a solo session works for watching and chatting, but only one person controls the settlement.
