City building in Beyond These Stars is about fitting a working settlement onto the back of Kewa, a space whale. You start on a small green patch by the water, expand by terraforming, and spend the early game balancing land, walking distance, power, and pollution. It is a city builder and colony sim, not a flat sandbox.

The loop in plain terms

The Steam store page frames the central choice well: place buildings as the land allows, or reshape the land to gain adjacency bonuses and shorter travel times. Terraforming is part of normal construction — canals and top soil prepare ground for farming, trees provide raw materials, and forests help spread the atmosphere. The same page warns that Kewa's land is fragile; over-exploit it and your habitat can shrink. Outposts on nearby planets are how you supplement resources you cannot produce at home, but Kewa may not stay in a system forever.

Launch-week practical notes

The practical notes below come from launch-week posts and reviews on the Steam Community hub; treat specific numbers and balance complaints as player estimates from the 1.0 release window.

  • Follow the tutorial questline before free-building. One reviewer at roughly 45 minutes had built a first school and was supporting around 50 Peeps. That is one player's pace, not a target.
  • Keep the first core compact. Adjacency and travel time matter, and a tight cluster around the starting green patch is usually easier to staff than a scattered layout. Leave gaps for production buildings and later terraforming.
  • Get power working before scaling industry. A launch-day player reported being stuck with a burner generator and an ore smelter that both said they had no power connection. A reasonable first check is the range line shown when you select a Power Generator and whether the two are actually connected; the 17 October 2026 hotfix changed that line from Pollution range to Power range, so it now shows the relevant range.
  • Treat toxic waste as a layout problem. Mines and smelting can leave Toxic areas; one reviewer described over-industrializing and leaving the Peeps a large cleanup. The first hotfix also fixed a case where a building being moved could get blocked when Peeps cancelled because their home was demolished or covered in Toxic. Leaving space between heavy industry and housing is a sensible habit, not a confirmed optimal distance.
  • Watch soot before you need it. A player reported long waits for soot and said running burners and ore smelters hard enough to make it floods the colony with iron and copper. That is a launch-window balance report, not a guarantee that your map will behave the same way.
  • Do not assume a hut-to-house upgrade button. A player asked whether huts have to be bulldozed and rebuilt to become houses, and suggested an upgrade button in the hut's tooltip. The visible Steam Community thread from 17 October 2026 does not confirm that such a button exists; it records the request. It is worth looking for an upgrade option before rebuilding, but the thread does not settle it.

If a system looks stuck

  • "No power connections" on a generator and a smelter: check the generator's power range line and whether the two are connected first. The hotfix note about the range line suggests the display was misleading, not that connections were removed.
  • Landscapers not composting: one player reported landscapers not performing composting jobs and the composter being too slow to keep up with pollution. There is no confirmed workaround in that thread; if it persists, report it rather than assuming you missed a button.
  • Soot shortages: the discussion is a balance complaint, not a hidden recipe. No confirmed fix was posted in the visible thread.

Version and demo note

Beyond These Stars released in 1.0 on 16 October 2026. Hotfix #1 followed on 17 October 2026 and included the building-move fix and the Power Generator range-line change. Launch-week balance reports may not match later patches. As of 17 October 2026, the Steam store page lists a demo and Steam Deck compatibility as Playable; the Epic Games Store page also lists the game.
