Beyond These Stars Demo: What It Is and How to Play
Yes, Beyond These Stars has a free demo on Steam, first released in June 2024 and updated in late 2025. Here's what it covers and how to find it.

Table of Contents
Yes — Beyond These Stars has a free playable demo on Steam, and as of 2026-10-17 the official Steam page still shows a "Demo Available" panel with a Download Demo button, even though the full game has now launched. So you can try the game before deciding to buy it.
Demo timeline
The developer's press kit gives the dates plainly:
- Demo release: 11 June 2024
- Demo update: 18 November 2025
- Full release: 17 October 2026 (NZT) / 16 October 2026 (CST) — the Steam page lists the release as Oct 16, 2026.
That means the demo you download today is not the original 2024 build. Feedback posted during 2024 and 2025 in the Steam demo subforum refers to earlier versions, so treat older impressions about balance, tutorial pacing and quality-of-life as possibly out of date.

How to find the demo
The demo is a separate download attached to the main store page rather than its own store entry. In October 2024, when players could not spot it, the developer replied in the demo feedback subforum that the demo was still up and had simply been "moved around a little", sitting on the right-hand side of the page. Steam page layouts change over time, so if the button is not where you expect, look for the demo block in the right-hand column near the purchase box before assuming it is gone.
What the demo actually contains
A player playthrough of the demo gives the clearest picture of the opening: you pick a scenario, then work through a tutorial that lands your Peeps on the back of the space whale Kewa. The early steps are roads, huts, potato patches and a water pump, with buildings needing to sit next to roads and picking up adjacency effects from neighbouring tiles and terrain — the water pump, for example, wants water tiles nearby. From there the technology tree opens up mines, an ore smelter, a burner generator and a toolsmith, and unlocking buildings earns perk points you spend on settlement bonuses. The video's author describes it as a city builder on the back of an animal, comparable in concept to The Wandering Village.
Expect this to be a slice of the full game: the tutorial and an early settlement, not the whole campaign. Since it is a demo build, the interface and balance may not match the released 1.0 version.

Things the demo does not settle
- Save carry-over: as of 2026-10-17, neither the official Steam page nor the developer's press kit states whether demo progress carries into the full game.
- Other storefronts: the press kit points buyers to both Steam and Epic for the full release, but the demo download is confirmed on the Steam page.
If you want to compare the demo's free-form setup with the finished game, see sandbox mode; for co-op questions, see multiplayer.
